Meet Dr. Erin Gillaspie: Trailblazer of Robotic Thoracic Surgery
“My grandfather had lung cancer and succumbed to the disease when I was young, so from the time that I can remember my family raised money for lung cancer research,” Dr. Gillaspie said. “When I discovered the opportunity to take care of people with lung cancer, I knew it was for me, it's what drives me, finding technologies and treatments to help people have better outcomes.”
A Toronto native, Dr. Gillaspie received her undergraduate degree from the University of Florida in Gainesville and her medical degree from the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine. She completed a residency at the Bassett Medical Center in Cooperstown, NY, and her fellowship in thoracic surgery at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN where she helped enroll patients in clinical trials for lung cancer research. In May 2018 she completed a Master’s of Public Health at Vanderbilt University where she started a robotic thoracic surgical program.
