Understanding the Differences Between a Psychiatrist and a Psychologist

By Karen Williams, LIMHP May 08, 2014 Posted in: Mental Health

May is well underway! For many families, May is a month of proms, gearing up for finals week, graduations, maybe even a wedding. Such a busy time of year! Here at Alegent Creighton Health, the month of May is a busy one also.  May is dedicated to Mental Health Awareness. Most people know that Alegent Creighton Health is a healthcare system that can provide them with the highest quality of care for them physically, but we also provide care for those seeking to improve their mental health. Understanding that physical and mental health are both important cannot be overstated. As mental health care providers, the month of May is about us inviting you to check in with yourself regarding your mental and emotional well being. Many people are so busy getting things done at work and at home, their own needs can get pushed to the back burner. Self-care becomes the last thing many people think about. Our very own Mission statement refers to treating the whole person – body, mind, and spirit. But sometimes that gets forgotten, pushed aside or neglected. We want you to take care of yourself – body, mind, and spirit. That’s where the mental health professionals at Alegent Creighton  Health can help. If you take a look at our website, you’ll notice there’s a link to our services. One of the first things you’ll see is that we have a  comprehensive department, with both inpatient and outpatient services for all ages - from children through seniors. Additionally, we offer a variety of mental health services in several locations throughout Omaha, Council Bluffs and Missouri Valley. And, while we’re on the topic of variety, we have numerous  providers with different expertise on our team:

  • Psychiatrists - medical doctors specially trained in psychiatric medicines for children and adults
  • Nurse Practitioners – nurses who are also trained in psychiatric medicines for children and adults
  • Psychologists -doctorate level professionals who provide testing and therapy
  • Psychotherapists - master’s level providers who offer therapy for depression, anxiety and all forms of mental health issues
  • Alcohol and Drug Abuse Counselors - master’s level providers who specialize in chemical dependency and/or chemical abuse issues

Our website also has wellness tools, including a depression screening assessment. It’s a great tool that offers explanations and suggestions for how to get further assistance. And, last but not least, we have the Psychiatric Assessment Center that is open 24-hours a day for crisis situations. As you can see, Alegent Creighton Health remains true to its Mission – offering services for body, mind, and spirit. We recognize that treating the whole person is essential for optimum health. As we celebrate Mental Health Awareness Month, if you or someone you care about, need more information, please feel free to visit our website or call our Information and Referral line at (402) 717-HOPE (4673) or 1 (800) 523-7294. Here’s to your good mental health!
