Far from being just mild "aches and pains," arthritis affects roughly 1 in 4 adults in the U.S., with a surprising 60% of sufferers being under 65.
In rural communities like ours, the challenge is even greater, with more than 1 in 3 adults affected. Linked to physically demanding occupations and access to care, many of our neighbors are faced with pain and limited mobility that restricts even basic daily activities.
Arthritis, a broad category of over 100 conditions, impacts joints and connective tissues causing various symptoms including chronic joint pain and stiffness. The most common form of arthritis is Osteoarthritis (OA) which is the chronic degenerative form of arthritis caused by the unavoidable wear and tear of joints throughout life. For years, we've emphasized low-impact physical activities like walking, swimming, and yoga, which are foundational for improving function, mood and quality of life.
However, I'm incredibly excited to share innovative news that’s bringing advanced care right here to our region. At CHI Health St. Francis in Grand Island and CHI Health St. Elizabeth in Lincoln, we are now offering Low-Dose Radiation Therapy (LDRT) for arthritis. Bringing this advanced therapy to our community means patients no longer have to travel for state-of-the-art care.
Now, let's clarify any misconceptions about "radiation." LDRT for arthritis is a fundamentally different approach. It's a non-invasive, safe, and highly effective treatment designed specifically for chronic pain, particularly for common forms like hip, knee and hand osteoarthritis.
How does it work? LDRT utilizes very small, anti-inflammatory doses of radiation—less than 10% of the doses used in cancer treatments. These precise, low doses work at a cellular level to reduce inflammation in the affected joint, effectively calming the painful processes associated with arthritis. We're seeing remarkable results, with approximately 70-80% of patients reporting significant relief. It has been mostly tried for large lower extremity joints (hip and knee) however can also be tried for other joints, like hands and shoulders, etc..
Please understand that arthritis is not just an inevitable part of aging or something you simply endure. It is a serious condition that affects rural communities at a much higher rate and deserves attention and effective treatment. While there isn't a cure yet, leading-edge, yet accessible treatments like LDRT, offer incredible possibilities for managing symptoms and significantly improving your quality of life.
