Pelvic pain is a complex and often debilitating condition that silently affects millions. Despite its widespread prevalence, many suffer in silence, their pain left undiagnosed and untreated. This isn't just a concern for a few; it impacts a significant portion of the population, including an estimated 1 in 6 women and a considerable number of men in the United States. Globally, up to 26% of women and 16% of men grapple with this issue each year. Far too often, people are left without answers or a clear path to relief.
Pelvic pain isn't a singular experience; it manifests in a variety of ways. It can contribute to unresolved hip and low back pain, making everyday movements a challenge. Pregnancy and postpartum periods can also exacerbate or introduce pelvic discomfort. Beyond these, individuals might experience abdominal and groin pain, pain during intimacy, or uncomfortable bowel and bladder symptoms. Sensations like pressure, aching, burning, tailbone pain, or discomfort while sitting are also common indicators. Recognizing these varied symptoms is the first step toward understanding and addressing the issue.
For many forms of pelvic pain, one of the most effective and evidence-based treatments is pelvic floor physical therapy. But what exactly is the pelvic floor? It's a crucial group of muscles located at the base of the pelvis, forming the lower portion of your "core." These muscles are vital for supporting your pelvic organs, including the bowel, bladder, and reproductive organs. When these muscles aren't functioning optimally – whether due to tightness, weakness, or other dysfunctions – they can be a significant contributor to pelvic pain.
Pelvic floor physical therapists are specially trained to assess and treat these dysfunctions. Through a comprehensive evaluation, we examine various factors that might be contributing to your pain, such as movement patterns, posture, breathing mechanics, muscle strength, and tension. Treatment plans are highly personalized and can include a range of techniques like targeted stretching, relaxation and breathing exercises, gentle manual therapy, and strengthening exercises.
Pelvic pain is very real, it affects many people, and most importantly, it is treatable. Far too many "just live with it," leading to prolonged suffering and a diminished quality of life. At CHI Health, our pelvic floor therapists will work with you to uncover the root cause of your symptoms and develop an effective treatment plan.
Through open conversation and increasing awareness, we can empower individuals to seek the care they need and deserve. No one should have to navigate these symptoms alone. Taking that step towards understanding and addressing pelvic pain can lead to significant improvements in comfort, function, and overall well-being.
