Beyond the Bedside: How Cancer Registrars Fight Cancer with Data
APR 16, 2025Cancer registrars keep track of vital information, playing a critical role in improving cancer treatment and research.
Read MoreAs a board-certified colorectal surgeon, I see firsthand the devastating impact of delayed colon cancer diagnosis. It's heartbreaking, and frankly, often preventable. The recent statistics are alarming: nearly 20,000 Americans under 50 were diagnosed with colon cancer last year. This isn't just an older person's disease anymore.
We're seeing too many young patients who initially experienced symptoms like rectal bleeding, only to be misdiagnosed with something less serious, like hemorrhoids. By the time they finally get a colonoscopy, the cancer has often spread, significantly impacting treatment options and prognosis. This is why I'm urging everyone, especially those experiencing concerning symptoms, to seek professional evaluation immediately.
The current screening guidelines recommend colonoscopies starting at age 45, and that's a good starting point. However, if you're experiencing any symptoms – rectal bleeding, persistent changes in bowel habits, unexplained weight loss, or abdominal pain – don't wait until you're 45. Schedule an appointment with your primary care physician.
A referral to our colorectal surgery team at CHI Health doesn't automatically mean a colonoscopy. We understand the anxiety surrounding this procedure. We utilize a range of diagnostic tools, from in-office scopes and other tests to help determine the best course of action for each individual patient. We'll work with you to find the most appropriate and least invasive approach.
While a colonoscopy remains the gold standard for colon cancer detection, at-home stool tests can play a role in assessment. However, it's crucial to remember that these tests have limitations. False positives and negatives can occur, potentially delaying crucial treatment. That's why a professional evaluation is absolutely essential. Don't rely solely on at-home tests.
At CHI Health, we offer comprehensive colorectal cancer care, from diagnosis to treatment and beyond. We provide surgery, chemotherapy, and advanced blood tests like CTDNA to help guide treatment decisions and personalize your care plan. We have the resources and expertise to support patients through every stage of their journey.
