Celebrating the Guiding Hands: Happy International IBCLC Day

By Lauren Gallagher, MD March 03, 2026 Posted in: Maternity Care

In March, we celebrate International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) Day! This special day is a global tribute to the unwavering dedication, profound expertise, and compassionate support that these extraordinary professionals provide to families embarking on their breastfeeding journeys.

Being a new parent is a whirlwind of joy, anticipation, and sometimes, a little bit of overwhelm. And for many, the decision to breastfeed, while natural, can come with its own unique set of challenges. This is where IBCLCs step in – as the guiding hands, the knowledgeable confidantes, and the unwavering champions for both parent and baby.

What Exactly Does an IBCLC Do? More Than You Might Think!

The term "lactation consultant" might conjure images of someone simply showing you how to hold your baby. While that's certainly part of it, the role of an IBCLC is far more comprehensive and deeply rooted in evidence-based care. They are healthcare professionals with specialized knowledge in human lactation and breastfeeding management, passing rigorous international examinations to earn their certification.

So, how do IBCLCs help new mothers (and partners!) navigate their breastfeeding experience? Let's dive in:

  • Pre-Natal Education and Planning: The journey often begins before the baby even arrives! IBCLCs can offer prenatal consultations to discuss breastfeeding goals, address any concerns, and provide education on what to expect, how to prepare, and common early challenges. This proactive approach can significantly increase confidence and success rates.
  • Initial Latch and Positioning Assistance: For many, the first few feeds can be a struggle. IBCLCs are experts in assessing and correcting latch and positioning issues that might lead to pain for the mother, inefficient milk transfer for the baby, or even nipple damage. They demonstrate various techniques to find what works best for each unique dyad.
  • Troubleshooting Common Challenges: From sore nipples and engorgement to low milk supply and mastitis, breastfeeding can present a variety of hurdles. IBCLCs are adept at diagnosing the root cause of these issues and developing personalized care plans to resolve them, often preventing more serious complications.
  • Supporting Babies with Specific Needs: Premature babies, those with tongue ties or lip ties, babies with specific medical conditions, or those struggling to gain weight – these are all situations where an IBCLC's specialized knowledge is invaluable. They work in conjunction with medical teams to ensure these delicate babies receive optimal nutrition.
  • Pumping, Storage, and Return to Work Strategies: Many mothers choose to pump breast milk, whether for returning to work, increasing supply, or simply for convenience. IBCLCs provide guidance on pump selection, proper storage techniques, and creating effective pumping schedules that integrate seamlessly into a busy life.
  • Weaning and Beyond: While their primary focus is on establishing and maintaining breastfeeding, IBCLCs also support mothers through the weaning process, ensuring it's done gently and comfortably for both parent and child.
  • Emotional Support and Empowerment: Perhaps one of the most invaluable aspects of an IBCLC's work is the emotional support they provide. Breastfeeding can be an incredibly vulnerable and demanding experience. IBCLCs offer a non-judgmental space, validate feelings, build confidence, and empower mothers to trust their instincts and their bodies. They are a sounding board, a cheerleader, and a source of reassurance during challenging times.

Beyond the Baby: A Holistic Approach

IBCLCs understand that breastfeeding is not just about milk; it's about the entire family unit. They consider a mother's physical and mental health, her support system, cultural considerations, and her personal goals when crafting individualized care plans. They work collaboratively with other healthcare providers, ensuring a holistic approach to maternal and infant well-being.
