Kindness releases oxytocin, also known as the ‘love hormone’ which helps to lower blood pressure while increasing optimism and self-esteem. Kindness also increases the production of serotonin, one of the neurotransmitters that improve our mood through decreasing anxiety and depression and increasing happiness. Acts of kindness we perform for others not only decrease our stress levels, but we also spread this happiness to our recipients. So, why not spread kindness in our daily lives?
There are many ways to help and celebrate Random Acts of Kindness Month. These ideas can be as simple as a smile or compliment as well as ‘paying it forward’ and paying for the person behind you in line for their morning coffee pick me up!
Kindness doesn’t have to be monetarily costly. Some ideas that require little time, no money, and make another’s day brighter are shared below.
Give a heartfelt complement to a coworker, friend, family member or stranger.
There are many organizations that would appreciate your time and skills. Find a local cause or organization and share an hour. Help someone with learning a skill you enjoy. Kindness reaches out to others.
Donating clothing, food or money can make a difference in someone’s life and spread a smile.
Build a sense of community by listening, shoveling snow, mowing the grass or offering to get the mail when they are gone.
Leaving a little positive note for others, such as a family member’s lunch, a coworker’s desk, or in random public places like a washroom, grocery store, or library can spread a smile. Let others know you appreciate them.
Reach out and let a friend or family member know you are thinking of them. A simple message can mean a lot, even more if they are having a difficult time.
Considering another person in this way is a simple but thoughtful way to spread kindness.
Sometimes the best act of kindness is showing patience with others. Listen in conversations; be mindful of others in the store when shopping; prevent frustrations in traffic or sitting at the stoplight. Kindness is appreciated through understanding those around you.
Don’t forget, kindness starts with yourself. Treat yourself with care, forgiveness and self-love. Being kind and giving yourself grace makes it easier to spread kindness to others.
Sharing ‘Acts of Kindness’ is about making the world a little brighter one small act at a time. Sharing kindness has a ripple effect. It can all start with a simple smile. Pick a day and start sharing the kindness you want to see in the community. You will brighten someone’s day and make your own better.
