Understanding ACL Tears and ACL Reconstruction

By Daniel Hatz, MD February 17, 2025 Posted in: Orthopedics

As an orthopedic surgeon, I see a significant number of ACL (anterior cruciate ligament) injuries. ACL ruptures are a common occurrence, often resulting from sudden twisting or impact during athletic activities.

Understanding ACL Tears

What exactly happens when your ACL tears? Simply put, your tibia (shinbone) and femur (thighbone) move in opposite directions, causing the ligament that connects them to tear. Unfortunately, unlike some other injuries, an ACL tear doesn't heal on its own. It requires surgical reconstruction to restore stability to the knee. This means we need to "remake" the ACL using your own tissue.

Traditional vs. Minimally Invasive Techniques

Traditionally, ACL reconstruction involved harvesting a bone-patellar-bone graft – a section of bone from your kneecap, a section from your tibia, and the middle portion of your patellar tendon. While effective, this method carries a risk of complications, including persistent anterior knee pain and difficulty kneeling.

The Advantages of All-Inside ACL Reconstruction

That's why I utilize a minimally invasive, all-inside ACL reconstruction technique. This approach involves only four small incisions, significantly reducing the invasiveness of the procedure.  Instead of using the patellar tendon, I utilize the quadriceps tendon, minimizing the risk of post-operative pain and complications associated with patellar tendon harvesting. This allows for a faster recovery and a quicker return to your chosen activities.

Personalized Care for Optimal Results

The all-inside technique also allows for precise graft selection, ensuring the perfect fit for your individual anatomy and activity level. This personalized approach helps optimize your outcome and get you back to doing what you love – whether it's playing your favorite sport or simply enjoying an active lifestyle.

Next Steps

If you've suffered an ACL tear, I encourage you to schedule a consultation. Call us at (402) 717-0820 to schedule. We can discuss your specific situation and determine the best course of treatment to get you back on your feet and back to your life. Minimally invasive ACL reconstruction offers a less invasive, faster recovery option, allowing you to return to your active lifestyle sooner.
