Using Patient’s Own Stem Cells to Fight Cancer

As a stem cell oncology nurse navigator, I help coordinate the transplant process and educate, guide, support and advocate for the patient and family during each step of the stem cell transplant process.

What is a stem cell transplant? It’s using the patient’s own stem cells to help save his or her life. Autologous Stem Cell Transplant is the procedure of collecting and cryopreserving or freezing a patient’s stem cells. A few weeks later the patient is admitted to the hospital for high dose chemotherapy and the thawed cells are re-infused. The healthy stem cells begin producing normal blood cells. Autologous Stem Cell Transplant is used to treat certain types of cancer including, but not limited to, Multiple Myeloma and Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma.

The Multidisciplinary Stem Cell Transplant Team provides transformational care for patients as we treat the whole person. This is just one more service Alegent Creighton Health offers to our patients.
