As a stem cell oncology nurse navigator, I help coordinate the transplant process and educate, guide, support and advocate for the patient and family during each step of the stem cell transplant process.
What is a stem cell transplant? It’s using the patient’s own stem cells to help save his or her life. Autologous Stem Cell Transplant is the procedure of collecting and cryopreserving or freezing a patient’s stem cells. A few weeks later the patient is admitted to the hospital for high dose chemotherapy and the thawed cells are re-infused. The healthy stem cells begin producing normal blood cells. Autologous Stem Cell Transplant is used to treat certain types of cancer including, but not limited to, Multiple Myeloma and Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma.
